A new instrument for quantitative determination of urine urea, designed by Giovanni Bufalini director of experimental pharmacology laboratory in Florence, was presented in 1897. The apparatus, based on the gasometric hypobromite method, measured the nitrogen gas formed by the reaction of urea with alcaline hypobromite. It was evaluated by estimating the correlation to the Esbach apparatus, the results reproducibility as well as their variability connected with the reaction time. Bufalini’s method was regarded as very suitable for clinical needs and very useful to physicians for its good performances
