184 - Iodine deficiency disorders and methods for determination of urinary iodine concentration

Summary
Iodine is an essential oligoelement in the synthesis of thyroid hormones. The main source of iodine is dietary and its requirement changes with age, as well as during pregnancy and feeding. Because the main (98%) pathway of excretion of iodine is renal, the daily intake of a subject is assessed by measurement of urinary iodine concentration (UIC). Several methods for measurement of UIC are based on spectrophotometric evaluation of iodine according to Sandell-Kolthoff reaction. Automatic methods using HPLC and ICP/MS technique, with high effectiveness but high cost, have been also proposed. This review examines the characteristics of analytical methods for iodine measurement, and diagnostic strategies for the prevention of iodine-deficient disorders.
